Third Prize
Design in Partnership: Courtney Jones, Tim Blonkvist

This project was awarded third place in a design competion organized by Overland Partners and Icon 3D. The challenge was to use the features of Icon’s latest concrete 3D printer technology to design a two story affordable house.
The Concrete 3D printer brings speed, reduced labor, resiliency, nearly zero waste, and design freedom to the world of affordable housing construction.
The overall well-being that comes from communal living, and the ability to expand the house incrementally as the family grows, are the heart of this design solution.

This community-focused installation is an initiative from the interns of Overland Partners Architects to reactivate Plaza Guadalupe, an important square located in the west side of San Antonio, Texas. The mission is to preserve the essence of the Plaza and celebrate the Mexican-American heritage.
The boxes echo the modularity of the existing structure it is placed. They are both stationary and dynamic, functioning as a blank canvas for the community to use. In the evening, they bring color and light through the perforations, which is an abstract representation of the plaza’s footprint.
